May Sports Report 2010

The varsity softball team has a record of 4-2. They returned to their winning ways with a resounding win against Fair Haven 11-1. After a tough 3-1 loss to Brattleboro in the first game of the season the Otter girls' bats came alive with Meranda Bassette, Michelle Lefebvre and Ashlie Delphia each contributing two hits apiece. Mallory Ketcham did a fine job in her first varsity game allowing only two hits. After losing to Hartford OV knocked off Fair Haven, Mill River and Burr & Burton. Kaylee Pinson has been the pitcher of record with Michaela Harrington and Kristy Pinkham contributing key hits.
Ray Counter's JV softball team has yet to be beaten. They staged come back wins against both Brattleboro and Mill River to keep their record intact. Chalyn Costa and Marissa D'Avignon combined on some excellent base running to score the winning run against Mill River.
The middle school softball team has won both of its games, one against MAU and the other against Castleton Village School. Taylor Aines pitched well in both games. The 8th grade baseball team handily won its first game against Castleton.
The varsity baseball team got thumped in their first game against Rutland. They played a much more competitive game against Fair Haven where they staged a strong comeback before losing 8-6. Joe Massores had a number of hits including a scorching double to deep left field. Freshman Justin Owen pitched three innings of scoreless ball in relief of Nate Fitzgerald. OV returned the favor with a win at Fair Haven. That was followed by a tough loss at Mill River where Joe Massores hit a three run homer to make the game competitive.  Brett Patterson pitched well in his first varsity game. We hosted Bellows Falls and dusted them 15-0 on the strong arm of Alex Alger with his six K's and no runs. We had excellent hitting up and down the lineup with four athletes collecting three hits each: Elisha Gale, Joe Masorres, Jon Shaw and Mack Lacy. Joe and Elisha each had three RBI's.
Coach Tim Mitchell's JV baseball team has had a good start to the season with several competitive games. Though beaten by the Rutland JV squad twice both games were well played. We beat Fair Haven and lost at Bellows Falls.
The varsity boys' lacrosse team hosted and beat Vergennes 16-11 in an excellent first game on Markowski Field. OV played a great game on both ends of the field and knocked off Vergennes a program we had not beaten before. Coach Hill was pleased with his athletes' hard work and was particularly impressed with how his team controlled the game in the second half. Senior captain Andrew Piper had seven goals while sophomore Matt Miller knocked in six goals. Pete Bautista and Brain Rademacher were excellent on defense and freshman Elyas O'Classen stepped up in goal after starting goalie Zach Zepson hurt his ankle. After their initial win the Otters lost tough games against Mt. Abe and Hartford. Beaten by Burr & Burton in the B&B tournament first round OV played a competitive game against MSJ before losing 6 - 4. Though we controlled the game we had a tough time scoring and came up short. We knocked them off in the rematch at MSJ 8 - 5. Tailing 5 - 4 at halftime we scored four unanswered goals to win going away. Matt and Andrew each had three goals and Colby Frazier did an excellent job controlling the midfield play.
The JV boys and girls' lacrosse squads have had four games to date where we are working hard though we have yet to collect a win.
The golf team competed at Rutland and won the boys' competition with Brett Bergeron and Jordan Patten turning in the best OV scores. Brett was the medalist for the day.
The girls' tennis team hosted their first match against Rutland and lost 4 - 2 with Claire Quigley and Phoenix Kenney recording wins.
All athletes and OV students are encouraged to participate in a fund raising fun run on Saturday May 8 at 10:00 am. at the Transfiguration Farm in Brandon. The run is a benefit event in memory of Sarah Leary who was a student at both Otter Valley and Proctor. The event will be raising funds to support school trips at both schools. It will be a fitting celebration for a young lady who was taken from us much too soon. Entries are available from Mrs. Mitchell or the athletic director.
The OV Football Club will also be hosting their annual Block & Blitz Football Golf Classic at Neshobe the same day so we will all be hoping for good weather and a strong turn out for both events. Please contact Kelly Carter for details. She can be reached at 483-6123.
Many thanks for your patience as the spring unfolds with the various scheduling issues. Combined with our tricky weather it always seems to be our most challenging season. Thanks as well to all who support our school events.

      Good sports this spring.
