School reform takes shape in VT

(Host) During President Barack Obama's presidential address to Congress Tuesday night, he brought up the need for school reform, and pushed the idea that schools need to do a better job of preparing students for jobs in a globalized world.

Trout are made of Trees

Have you ever sat down to a plate of decomposing leaves, lightly battered and fried?  Maybe topped off with a little lemon and thyme?

Chances are, if you are a Vermonter this is one of your favorite dishes.  This past Thursday, October 8th the students of Otter Valley Union High School’s Moosalamoo Center facilitated a hands-on science workshop for a group of first graders from nearby Neshobe elementary school around the idea of trout being made of trees.  They began the morning with Moosalamoo students Andrew Fusco playing the part of “Brookie” and Becca Pattis reading April Sayre’s Trout are made of Trees.

Moosalamoo Student Invite

OVUHS’s Moosalamoo Students personally invited to intern with nationally recognized naturalist and habitat specialist Sue Morse.

When nationally recognized naturalist and habitat specialist Sue Morse takes groups into the woods to observe and monitor evidence of wildlife she generally spends as much time looking out for her clients as she does looking for animal signs. 

Recently, however, two students  of Moosalamoo Center for Experiential Education of Otter Valley gave her quite a surprise in how well they know the backcountry.  That may be because Brittney Brouillard and Geoff McDonald spend nearly as much time learning in the field as they do in the classroom.
